Superlativesصفات عالی / برترین
وقتی می‌خواهیم نشان دهیم چیزی یا کسی از بابت یک ویژگی در یک گروه بیشترین یا کمترین است، از صفت‌های عالی یا برترین استفاده می‌کنیم.
برای این منظور صفت‌ها را به سه دسته تقسیم می‌کنیم:
tall + esttallest
بلندترین
fine + estfinest
بهترین
big + estbiggest
بزرگ‌ترین
happy + esthappiest
شادترین
در صفت‌های تک‌سیلابی‌ای مانند "big" که به «یک حرف صامت + یک حرف مصوت + یک حرف صامت» ختم می‌شوند، وقتی "est-" اضافه می‌شود، حرف آخر تکرار می‌شود.
در صفت‌های تک‌سیلابی و دو‌سیلابی که به "y" ختم می‌شوند، مانند "happy"، وقتی "est-" اضافه می‌شود، "y" به "i" تبدیل می‌شود.

معمولا قبل از صفت‌های عالی از حرف تعریف the یا یکی از صفت‌های ملکی مانند her ،you ،my و ... استفاده می‌کنیم.
She's my best friend.
او بهترین دوستم است.
This is themost delicious meal I've ever had.
این خوشمزه‌ترین غذایی است که در عمرم خورده‌ام.
