IELTS General Writing Task 1 SampleInformal Thank-You Letter

If you’re preparing for the IELTS General Training Writing Task 1, it’s important to know how to write a warm and natural informal letter. In this sample, you’ll see how to thank friends for their hospitality after a holiday and invite them to visit — a common situation you might face in the IELTS exam. Pay close attention to the informal tone, personal expressions, and how each part of the task is fully addressed. Use this informal thank-you letter example to strengthen your writing skills and feel more confident on test day.

You recently returned from an overseas trip where you spent your holiday staying with friends. They have now sent you some pictures from your visit.

Write a letter to your friends. In your letter

  • express your appreciation for the pictures and their hospitality
  • explain the reason for your delayed response
  • suggest they visit you and stay at your place

Dear Sara and Tom,

I hope you and the kids are all doing well! We already miss you and talk about our time together every day. I’m really sorry for not writing earlier. Things have been quite hectic since we got back.

Thank you so much for the lovely photos! They brought back such great memories. I especially love the one of the four of us. It’s now framed and hanging on our living room wall. Also, a big thank-you for your warm hospitality and for showing us around. We truly had an unforgettable time.

Work has been extremely demanding since we returned. Unfortunately, a few problems came up at the office while I was away, and I’ve been tied up trying to sort everything out. That’s why I couldn’t get in touch sooner.

By the way, Martin and I are hosting a small get-together this Saturday evening. We’re planning a barbecue in the backyard and would love for you to join us! It’ll be very relaxed and fun. If you like, you’re more than welcome to stay over, and the next morning, we could all head out for a picnic in the countryside nearby.

Really hope you can make it. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Warmest wishes,

Janice
